DIY...Leather Bookmarks

I came into some absolutely fabulous metallic leather (courtesy of my mother... gosh I love her!) and had to use it. Add some fun little bobbles and trinkets. Throw in a fabulous tassel I'm obsessed with and ta-da... a gorgeous bookmark is born, totally worthy of the coffee table books!

Yep, I'm in love...

Supplies
Leather
Embroidery Floss (the entire thing)
A few jump rings
Short length of chain
Baubles and Trinkets
Scissors
Pliers
Needle (or nail)

Instructions
Cut a piece of leather out approximately 1-1/2"-2" wide by the length you need for your particular book. I didn't measure or draw my rectangle out because I didn't want it perfectly square. I wanted it to be irregular... I felt it added to the character to the bookmark!

Once your leather is cut out, punch a hole, centered in the top, of the leather about 1/8"-1/4" from the edge. You may need to hammer the hole into the leather depending on whether or not you are using real or faux leather.

Connect a jump ring through the hole and add the length of chain to the jump ring.

It is now time to make your super fabulous and easy tassel!! Cut two sections of embroidery thread, one about 6 inches and the other about 12 inches.

Take the shorter piece and tie it around the center. I would recommend wrapping it and tying it a number of times to make sure it is nice and tight.

Fold the thread in half and using the second piece of thread, tie the two halves together. Again, tie and wrap it a number of times to make sure it is nice and tight.

Trim the bottom folded sections of the thread off as well as the extra length from your ties.

Attach another jump ring to the top of your tassel and attach it to the end of your chain! You may have to do a little finagling and digging to get the jump ring on the tassel, but I promise, it will go on.

You now have a super simple bookmark! Time to jazz it up with those extra bits of chain, jump rings, trinkets and baubles!

There you have it... the perfect little gift for anyone with a book! Super easy, fast, and beautiful! My favorite kind of project... and can you imagine the possibilities with all the different colored leather and embroidery thread out there? Oh they are endless!!!

So, what do you think? Can you imagine it in those beautiful coffee table books?
